It's shorthand for 'common system area'. (1) A main CICS storage control block that contains the areas and the data necessary for the operation of the CICS. (2) of MVS, a zone that contains the system control programs and control blocks. Storage within the common area are the system queue area (SQA), page-able link pack area (PLPA), the modified link pack area (optional)(MLPA), a pageable BLDL table, a copy of the prefixed storage area (PSA) (for multiprocessor systems only) and a common system area (CSA).
