A condition of being threatened by serious and/or imminent danger, and of requiring immediate assistance.
Industry:Aviation
A condition of certain chemical elements (niobium, tantalum, vanadium, tin, and others) when they are held at a temperature near absolute zero. At this low temperature, these metals lose almost all their electrical resistance and become strongly diamagnetic. They try to orient themselves across a magnetic field, rather than aligning with the field.
Industry:Aviation
A condition of cloud coverage of the sky consisting of rows of altocumulus or cirrocumulus clouds. These clouds look like the pattern of scales on a mackerel fish.
Industry:Aviation
A condition of combustion instability in a gas turbine engine or afterburner. The combustion produces a shrill, high-pitched noise.
Industry:Aviation
A condition of cyclic values in which two waves do not pass through zero at the same time.
Industry:Aviation
A condition of engine operation in which the engine tries to run backward when it is being started. Kickback is caused by the ignition spark occurring while the piston is moving slowly upward on the compression stroke. Since the piston is moving slowly, the pressure from the expanding gases is applied to the piston before it passes over top center of the compression stroke. Kickback is prevented by timing the ignition so the starting spark occurs late.
Industry:Aviation
A condition of equilibrium, or rest. A lever is in balance when all the forces acting on one side of the fulcrum, or pivot point, are exactly equal to all the forces acting on the opposite side.
Industry:Aviation
A condition of excessive manifold pressure in a reciprocating engine. Overboosting occurs when the supercharger is operated at too high a speed.
Industry:Aviation
A condition of flight of a helicopter when the retreating blade is operating at an angle of attack higher than will allow the air to flow over its upper surface without turbulence.
Blade stall occurs when the helicopter is in high-speed forward flight or when it is settling with power.
