A material or substance used to keep something dispersed, or suspended, in something else. Ashless Dispersant (AD) oil contains a dispersant that keeps all the contaminants picked up by the oil dispersed until it passes through filters where the contaminants are trapped. If the oil did not have the dispersant, the contaminants would settle out and plug passages inside the engine.
Industry:Aviation
A material spread on a mold before plastic resin is put into it. The parting compound keeps the resin from sticking to the mold. Parting compound is sometimes called a parting agent.
Industry:Aviation
A material such as glass cloth or mat placed over a composite layup to absorb the excess resin that is forced out of the ply fibers when pressure is applied.
Industry:Aviation
A material that absorbs moisture from the air. Silica gel is a hygroscopic material used to protect delicate equipment from damage caused by moisture in the air. When bags of silica gel are placed in the equipment, any moisture in the air is absorbed by the silica gel, and the air is kept dry.
Industry:Aviation
A material that contains iron and has a high magnetic permeability. Ferromagnetic materials can be magnetically saturated (all the magnetic domains aligned in the same direction). They have good retentivity; they retain a large amount of their magnetism when the magnetizing force is removed.
Industry:Aviation
A material that contains no water.
Industry:Aviation
A material that emits electrons when light shines on it. Some of the alkaline metals, such as cesium, lithium, and rubidium, are photoelectric.
Industry:Aviation
A material that melts and flows over the surface of metal being welded. Flux produces an airtight seal which prevents oxygen reaching the surface of the hot metal and forming an oxide film. Oxides on the metal contaminate the weld.
Industry:Aviation
A material that offers a large amount of opposition to the flow of electrons. Glass, most types of plastic, ceramics, and a vacuum are examples of electrical insulators.
Industry:Aviation
A material that removes some of the moisture from the air inside a component. Some dehydrators use silica gel to absorb the moisture. The silica gel crystals may be colored with an indicator dye that changes its color from blue to pink when the crystals absorb moisture.
