An instrument for measuring the frequency of oscillation of a periodic signal.
Industry:Weather
An instrument similar to the dewpoint hygrometer, but especially suited for low frost points. The strong cooling necessary for these measurements is provided either by multistage Peltier devices or by evaporating low-boiling-point (cryogenic) fluids like liquid nitrogen. Using this technique, frost points down to −100°C can be measured. Electrical resistance wires are used to provide heating.
Industry:Weather
An instrument that obtains a continuous measurement of the sign and magnitude of the local electric potential gradient by alternately shielding and exposing a conductor that is grounded through a resistance to develop an alternating potential that is proportional to the field.
Industry:Weather
An increase or amplification. There are two general uses of the term in radar meteorology: 1) antenna gain (or gain factor), which is the ratio of the power transmitted along the beam axis to that of an isotropic radiator transmitting the same total power; and 2) receiver gain (or video gain), which is the amplification given a signal by the receiver.
Industry:Weather
An individual thunderstorm the initiation of which resulted from rising motion associated with a front, or a thunderstorm within a convective system generated and organized by frontal rising motion.
Industry:Weather
An inhomogeneous term appearing in a differential equation, that is, a term that can be a function of the independent variable but not of the dependent variable in the equation.
Industry:Weather
An instrument designed to determine the water content of snow by measuring the amount of gamma radiation absorbed by the snow overlying the transmitter that is placed at the surface. Because the earth naturally emits gamma radiation, by the same concept, aircraft measurements of gamma radiation can be used to estimate the water content of snow on the ground along the aircraft's flight path.
Industry:Weather
An extension of a glacier or ice stream projecting seaward, usually afloat.
Industry:Weather
An IF–THEN rule that applies equally well to all geographic locations and is independent of the data source.
